House Hunting... Renting in Portland, OR

Looking for a rental apartment or rental house in Portland? Hahahaha Good Luck!

For some reason, we found it super hard to rent a place in Portland. It's a city that really wants you to buy. The real estate offices don't list rentals, and there is no such thing as a broker. So we felt a bit out on a limb all on our own looking for a place. This was extra hard because are so new to the city we have no idea about neighborhoods.

From what I have experienced there are 3 options:

1. search on craigslist, where you will find listings by owner

2. wander round and look for 'For Rent' signs out side of buildings managed by companies

3. walk in to a new high rise where they have a leasing office

We saw places to rent that were just all over the spectrum. From hideous nightmare horror movie to adorable victorian cottage to creepy damp smelling duplexes to brand new high rise with granite finishes... they whole process left us exhausted and somewhat defeated.

Portland's East / West divide is just really evident to me. Where I was super happy to move to Brooklyn from Manhattan, I just didn't like how spread out the East was in Portland, and how far each area was form each other. Or how far it seemed from the center of town. I mean the bridges are small, but for some reason, it felt like a completely different city once you crossed them.

I think we are used to living in a busy city, and our Fort Greene apartment in Brooklyn was on the main strip with lots going on. My thoughts were that we would find the move too jarring if we moved out to such a residential area. That we needed some time in the West to readjust to living in a greener, cleaner city.

So we have our hearts set on finding a place in the NW area. Wish us luck!
